Course Description

This 2.5 day, 23-hour course provides the physical therapist with an in-depth understanding of how specific PT interventions during the antepartum and intrapartum periods may affect birth outcomes and postpartum maternal health. Practical, evidence-based knowledge and advanced skills in providing therapeutic and educational support are included. Didactic instruction includes: maternal pelvis anatomic characteristics and biomechanical considerations for childbirth, orthopedic diagnosis considerations, causes and management of dysfunctional labor, psychosocial considerations in childbirth, labor and vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery, and early postpartum interventions. Instructor to participant ratio for labs will be 1:8 to ensure valuable attention to each participant. Labs offer skills that are immediately applicable and include: preparation for childbirth, positions for promoting efficient labor, hands-on interventions for dysfunctional labor and labor with orthopedic considerations, physical and mental coping including hands-on techniques. All participants will participate in comprehensive standardized patient lab scenarios to demonstrate skills integration competency. Upon completion of this course, participants will have expanded therapeutic and educational strategies to support the pregnant client in optimizing labor, delivery, and acute postpartum recovery.

Cognitive domain:

  • Learners will value their unique qualifications and position to provide therapeutically focused education to the antepartum client in support of the intrapartum period
  • Learners will examine numerous variables involved in providing education for therapeutic support of the antepartum and intrapartum client
  • Learners will select and support appropriate methods of providing therapeutic support for the antepartum and intrapartum client

Psychomotor domain:

  • Learners will demonstrate appropriate integrated biomechanical and psychosocial strategies for therapeutic and educational support of the antepartum and intrapartum client
  • Learners will adapt strategies in response to numerous variables when providing therapeutic and educational support of the antepartum and intrapartum client, as demonstrated through simulation
  • Learners will create a basic educational marketing resource aimed at promoting the physical therapist’s role providing therapeutic and educational support of the antepartum and intrapartum client

Affective domain: as demonstrated through simulation activities

  1. Participants will display cultural competence toward all those in attendance during simulation of therapeutic and educational support of the antepartum and intrapartum client
  2. Participants will favor the client’s autonomy during therapeutic and educational support of the antepartum and intrapartum client
  3. Participants will weigh the client’s right to a safe and healthy birth as defined by the client



Open to: Licensed Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, 2nd Year and 3rd Year Student Physical Therapists*

We recommend students have some orthopedic/musculoskeletal coursework in their curriculum prior to attending the course.

Pre-requisites: Fundamental Topics of Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy (OBF) course is highly recommended

Attendance: Participants are expected to stay through the entire course; please make your travel plans accordingly. Deduction of contact hours hours and ineligibility to participate in the CAPP process (for those attending CAPP courses) will occur for participants who leave the course early.

Lab Participation & Consent: Participants will be working in groups of 2-3 during labs. All participants will participate as both “clinician” and “patient.” These labs are appropriate for all participants to fully participate, including pregnant, post-partum and male participants.

Required pre-reading is to be completed prior to the course:

  • Manual D2-4
  • Recommended resource text:  The Labor Progress Handbook by Penny Simkin, Preparing for a Gentle
    Birth: The Pelvis in Pregnancy by Blandine Calais-Germain;

English Language Proficiency: If you are a foreign-educated physical therapist/assistant, you will need to pass the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) and meet the score requirements. There are some exemptions to the TOEFL requirement for individuals who are exempt under the USCIS regulations. TOEFL scores must be reported directly to SoWH for the purposes of determining eligibility for course attendance. The minimum TOEFL scores we require are the following: Reading: 21; Listening: 18; Writing: 24; Speaking: 26.
