This 2-day lecture style and class activity course is aimed at teaching physical therapist who already have skills in pelvic physical therapy how to expand those skills into working with people of all gender identities regarding medical or surgical aspects of transition. It would also be appropriate for any physical therapist who has an interest in better serving people who are gender diverse. There will be particular education regarding gender affirming genital surgeries as well as discussion of other gender affirming surgeries and medical interventions that people transitioning might choose.

Topics covered will include:
1. Societal influence on gender transition including interactions with health care providers;
2. Recognizing difference between sex, sexuality, and gender;
Understand the complexities of the legal system for the person transitioning gender;
3. Tips and tools for a trauma informed intake and examination;
Health effects of hormones for gender transition as related to differential diagnosis in PT;
4. Supporting healing after gender affirming surgery;
5. Operative procedures for face and chest;
6. Operative procedures for masculinizing and feminizing genital surgery;
7. Pre-operative evaluation, treatment and education issues, post- operative evaluation, treatment, education and follow up for genital surgeries;
8. Outcome measures with rehab focus for people undergoing gender affirming surgeries and.
9. Fertility and pregnancy in transgender people

Sandi Gallagher, PT, WCS

Sandi specializes in caring for people with pelvic floor problems and pain during pregnancy. She has advanced training in evaluating conditions of the pelvic floor including bowel and bladder problems and pain. She sees women, men and children who have these problems. Sandi enjoys working with people and having the opportunity to teach them how to reduce their symptoms.

Active with the APTA Section on Women’s Health as CAPP-OB committee chair and teaching assistant, Sandi takes part in training therapists in the evaluation and treatment of pregnant patients and patient with pelvic floor dysfunction. She is the recipient of Volunteer of the Year award along with the six member committee of 2013 Section on Women’s Health. In her spare time, Sandi enjoys spending time with her family, bicycling, reading, and gardening.
